Maximizing Bike Longevity Through Maintenance and Lubrication

The Importance of Bicycle Maintenance for Component Longevity

Regular bicycle maintenance is essential for extending the life of individual parts, especially after servicing and rebuilds. Through hundreds of rebuilds, we've concluded that clients who invest in additional care see significantly longer-lasting components. Simply washing the bike isn’t enough. The choice of oils and lubricants plays a vital role, as degreasers and shampoos can strip bearings, harm paint, and accelerate corrosion on carbon and aluminum components.

Washing and Drying Techniques

MSM recommends a pressure washer for bike cleaning, as it uses less water and avoids over-soaking. Avoid directing the spray on delicate components, and if using MSM Chain Lube, you can skip degreasers. After washing, dry the bike with an air compressor and/or ride it for 10-15 minutes to expel remaining water from bearings.

Effective Lubrication During Rebuilds

During MSM rebuilds, we use specialized lubricants (ranging from thin to thick) to remove water from bearings and restore a protective film. Proper lubricant use prevents over-greasing and ensures long-term performance, unlike many all-purpose market options that trap contaminants.
