Harsh Doesn't Mean You're Losing Grip
I spend a lot of my weekends in the technical zone at World Cup races, and if you stand there long enough you start to hear the same sentence over and over. A rider rolls in after a session, peels off a glove, and tells the mechanic: no grip. And almost before the words are out, the response is already underway - someone's clicking the rebound open, or closing it down, letting a couple of psi out of the tyres, pulling a token, chasing the feeling with whatever tool is closest to hand.
I understand the instinct. When a rider says they have no grip, everyone wants to do something, and do it fast. But I've stood through enough of these moments to notice how often the fix is pointed at the wrong target - because "no grip" and "this bike feels harsh" roll into the pits as the same complaint, and they are not the same problem.
Every rider knows the feeling. You come off a rough section, your hands are buzzing, the bar felt alive under you, and your instinct says the same thing it always says: I'm losing traction — I need to soften this thing up.
Most of the time, that instinct is wrong. Not because your hands are lying to you, but because they're answering a different question than the one you're asking. Harshness and grip loss feel similar through the bars, but they are two physically distinct things - and confusing them is one of the most common ways riders make their bike worse while trying to make it better.
Two jobs, sometimes pulling in opposite directions
Your suspension is doing two jobs at once, and they don't always agree.
The first is to isolate you from the ground - to soak up impacts so the terrain doesn't beat you up and you can keep control. The second is to keep the tyre pressed into the ground so it can actually generate grip: under braking, under cornering load, under power.
Comfort and traction. Most of the time these two goals travel together, and you never have to think about the difference. But on a genuinely rough track they can start to diverge , and that gap is exactly where riders get fooled.
What "harsh" actually is
Harshness is a feedback channel. It's energy reaching you - terrain passing up through the tyre, the wheel, the suspension, the frame, and into your hands and feet. How much of it arrives depends on a whole stack of things: tyre casing, pressure, damping, frame stiffness, even your grips.
Here's the part that matters. Harshness describes what reaches you. It is not a direct readout of what the tyre is doing against the ground. A bike can transmit a lot of chatter into your hands while the contact patch is tracking the surface beautifully. The trail is talking to you - loudly - and the tyre is still doing its job perfectly well.
What losing grip actually is
Grip is a contact-patch phenomenon. A tyre can only generate force - cornering, braking, drive - when it's loaded against the ground. The instant the wheel skips, hops or deflects off the surface, that load collapses toward zero, and for that moment the tyre can't transmit anything at all. That is real traction loss: the tyre leaving, or unloading from, the ground.
And this is a genuinely different event from terrain simply feeding energy into your hands. One is the ground pushing into the system. The other is the tyre losing the ground. They can occur together, but they don't have to - and, crucially, they don't leave the same signature. A bike can be harsh and gripping. It can also be plush and skating. Those are opposite problems, and they call for opposite responses.
Why the obvious fix backfires
The reflex to a harsh bike is to soften it - back off compression, drop a few psi, add sag, chase a quieter ride. If the harshness were actually the tyre losing contact, softening might help. But if it's just terrain input - which, on a rough track, it usually is, you've now given away support you needed.
Soften too far and a few things happen, none of them kind to grip. The suspension sits deeper in its travel and loses mid-stroke support, so the bike wallows and the geometry goes lazy. On repeated hits it can pack down, compressing into the next impact before it has recovered from the last - which leaves less travel in reserve and, worse, stops the wheel extending back down into holes to stay in contact. And a softer, slower bike simply can't get to the next hit in time.
So you set out to fix a grip problem you didn't have, and you build one you didn't have before. The bike feels calmer in your hands - because you removed some of that feedback - while underneath you the contact patch is working less well. Comfort went up; grip went down. That's the trap, and it's an easy one to walk into, because the bike genuinely feels nicer right up until it lets go.
Grip is about contact, not comfort
If there's one idea worth holding onto, it's this: traction comes from keeping the tyre loaded and in contact with the ground, and that is far more often a question of having enough support and control than of softness. Damping that manages energy so the wheel returns to the ground quickly does more for grip than making everything plusher ever will. A bike that feels busy but holds its line, drives predictably and brakes where you point it is very often gripping better than the plush one that goes quiet - and then washes out from under you.
Learning to tell them apart
So how do you separate the two without instrumentation? Stop listening to how much the bike buzzes, and start reading what it does under load.
Ask what happens when you're actually demanding something of the tyre - hard on the brakes, loaded up in a corner, on the power out of a rut. A harsh-but-tracking bike holds the line and does what you tell it; the chatter is just noise sitting on top of a tyre that's still working. A tyre that's genuinely losing grip behaves differently: it deflects off-line, skips wide, feels vague or floaty at the contact patch, washes when you lean on it. The first is a comfort question. The second is a grip question. Learning to feel which one you've got is most of the battle - because the fixes point in opposite directions.
The reason this is harder than it sounds is that, in the heat of a rough section, your hands can't always tell you which of the two is actually happening. Both arrive as the bar felt busy. That's precisely the gap where objective measurement earns its keep - pulling apart two signals that feel identical from the saddle, so a setup change is made on what the tyre is really doing rather than on how loud the trail happened to sound.
Feel gets you a long way. Knowing which of the two you're feeling gets you the rest.
