Suspension Setup for Amateurs: Getting 80% of the Way There

Everything from a weekend trail bike to a World Cup XCO machine passes through my workshop, and the single biggest lesson from all of it is uncomfortable for an industry built on selling upgrades: most riders are solving a problem they don't have.

They chase expensive components and complicated numbers while riding a suspension that is fundamentally miles off. Fix the fundamentals and you will leave 90% of riders - and a fair few of their pricey upgrades - behind. Better still, you can do it with a shock pump, ten minutes, and a stretch of trail you already know well.

No lab. No data logger. Just method.

Most of the industry is selling you complexity

Walk into any forum and you will drown in charts, click counts, and setup sheets copied from professional riders. Almost none of it will help you, because almost none of it applies to your weight, your speed, your trails, or your body.

The truth is simpler and a little boring: suspension setup is a craft of fundamentals, done in the right order. Get the order right and the rest mostly takes care of itself.

Here is the order, from biggest effect to smallest:

  1. Sag - how much travel your bodyweight alone uses when you settle into an attack position. This is the foundation everything else is built on. Set your pressure first, before you touch a single clicker.

  2. 2. Rebound - how fast the suspension returns. Too slow and it "packs down" through repeated hits and goes harsh; too fast and the bike bucks you like a trampoline. Set it by feel over a bumps or a small drop: if it kicks back, slow it down; if it feels dead through fast repeated hits, speed it up.
    3. Compression - for almost everyone, open it up and leave it alone. Touch it only when you have a specific, repeatable problem. Most amateurs run far too much because they assume "firmer" means "sportier." It doesn't. It just means slower and more tiring.
    4. Volume spacers (tokens) - only relevant if you are regularly bottoming out with correct sag. Ignore them until then.

Do the first two properly and you are already ahead of the vast majority of people on the trail.

Your body is the best data logger you own

This is the part people don't want to hear, especially the gear-obsessed: your body already measures everything that matters.

Grip, harshness, packing, wallow - you feel all of it in real time, corner by corner, if you slow down and pay attention. Ride a stretch you know, change one thing, ride it again, and ask a single question: better or worse? Keep what's better, reverse what's worse. That loop, repeated patiently, will out-tune almost anyone hunched over a laptop.

I have watched riders spend more time reading graphs than riding, and come away slower and more confused than when they started. For the overwhelming majority of riders, the gains are in the fundamentals and in saddle time - not in numbers on a screen.

So don't feel like you're missing a secret weapon. You aren't. You're carrying it.

But what about telemetry?

Fair question — and the honest answer is more interesting than "data bad."

Plenty of professional teams run telemetry now, now I'm focusing on XC teams especially. Sensors on the fork, sensors on the shock, thousands of data points every second. But having telemetry and being able to read it are two completely different sports, and far more teams have the first than the second. The hardware is the easy part. The hardware is not where anyone wins.

Because here is the question almost nobody stops to ask. When the software hands you a number and a verdict - his is good, change that - who wrote the algorithm behind it? What did they assume? Which rider did they build it for?

Not you. Almost certainly not you.

Every rider is an individual, and the body most of all. Your weight, your strength, how you load the bike, how you absorb a hit, how you move when you're fresh versus buried deep in the red - all of it is yours alone. A number that reads "dialed" for one rider can mean nothing, or the exact opposite, for another. An off-the-shelf algorithm doesn't know any of that. It hands everyone the same answer to a different question.

So the danger was never having too little data. It's trusting a generic verdict from a black box that was never built around you. The data isn't the skill. Reading your data, for your body, is - and that part doesn't come in a box.

The one variable nobody talks about

Here's where I'll let you in on something that quietly undoes everything above - and it isn't one of the four settings.

You can have perfect sag, perfect rebound, perfectly chosen tokens, and still ride a fork that feels dead over small chatter and vague in the corners. Why? Stiction - the friction the suspension has to overcome just to start moving from rest.

A dry, dirty, poorly lubricated fork behaves like a completely different, much worse product than a clean, properly serviced one - regardless of how carefully you set it up. Small-bump sensitivity, the thing that gives you grip and control, dies first. And no amount of clicker-fiddling brings it back.

This is why, before anyone spends money on a fancier fork, I tell them the same thing: set up what you already have, and make sure it moves the way it should. It is the cheapest performance upgrade in the sport, and almost nobody does it. Clean, low-friction suspension is where a surprising amount of the "magic" of a well-sorted bike actually lives.

The last 20%

Everything above will take you a long way — realistically to about 80% of what your suspension can give you. For the vast majority of riders, that is more than enough, and it costs you nothing but attention.

The remaining 20% is something different. It stops being something you can feel in a parking lot, and it stops being about clickers and pressure at all. It's a slower, more deliberate process, and honestly it isn't something that fits in a blog post - it's the part of the job I keep for the athletes I actually work with, race by race.

But that's a story for another day.

Start with the basics

If you take one thing from this: don't buy your way out of a setup problem. Get your sag right, sort your rebound, leave compression alone, and keep your suspension clean and moving freely. That simple checklist beats most upgrades on the market, and it beats every setup sheet you'll find online.

Do that, and you'll already be riding a better bike than the one you own today.
